How Esports Betting Legality in the US Works, per Betzonic
The legal landscape for esports betting in the United States is fragmented, evolving, and often misunderstood by both casual fans and serious bettors. Unlike traditional sports wagering, which has a clearer regulatory history dating back decades, esports betting sits at the intersection of gaming culture, digital markets, and state-by-state gambling law — a combination that creates genuine complexity for anyone trying to place a legal wager on a competitive gaming event. Understanding how the system actually works requires looking at federal law, individual state frameworks, and the specific ways that sportsbooks classify and offer esports markets.
The Federal Foundation: PASPA’s Repeal and What It Changed
For most of modern American history, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) effectively banned sports betting in all but four states — Nevada, Delaware, Montana, and Oregon. That changed dramatically in May 2018, when the Supreme Court ruled in Murphy v. National Collegiate Athletic Association that PASPA was unconstitutional, finding it violated the anti-commandeering doctrine of the Tenth Amendment. The ruling did not legalize sports betting nationwide. Instead, it returned the authority to regulate sports wagering to individual states, triggering a rapid and ongoing legislative expansion across the country.
Since 2018, more than 38 states and Washington D.C. have enacted some form of legal sports betting. However, federal law still plays a role through statutes like the Wire Act of 1961, which restricts the use of wire communications for interstate gambling, and the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA), which prohibits financial institutions from processing payments for certain unlawful online gambling transactions. Neither law explicitly defines esports betting as illegal, but both create a framework that state regulators must work around when crafting their own rules.
Esports specifically is not addressed in any major federal gambling statute. This silence is significant: it means esports betting is neither explicitly permitted nor explicitly prohibited at the federal level, leaving the question almost entirely to state legislatures and their respective gaming control boards.
How State Regulations Actually Treat Esports
When states legalized sports betting after 2018, most used broad definitions of “sporting event” that could theoretically encompass competitive gaming. But in practice, regulatory treatment of esports has varied considerably. Some states, like New Jersey and Colorado, have allowed licensed sportsbooks to offer esports markets with relatively few restrictions. Others have been more cautious, requiring specific regulatory approval before esports can be added as a betting category, or limiting wagering to events sanctioned by recognized governing bodies.
One recurring challenge is the question of what qualifies as a legitimate esports competition for betting purposes. Regulators worry about match integrity in an industry that lacks the centralized oversight structures of the NFL or NBA. There are no universal esports governing bodies with the authority and resources comparable to established sports leagues, which means sportsbooks and regulators must evaluate individual tournaments and publishers on a case-by-case basis. Events run by Riot Games, Valve, Activision Blizzard, and other major publishers have generally been accepted by licensed operators, while smaller or less-established tournaments face more scrutiny.
A practical breakdown of the current state-by-state situation is documented at betzonic.com/can-bet-esports-legally-us, where the regulatory status across different jurisdictions is mapped out in detail, reflecting how quickly the legal picture can shift as states update their gaming codes. This kind of resource matters because a bettor in Michigan operates under entirely different rules than one in Utah, where all forms of gambling remain prohibited, or in California, where a 2022 ballot initiative to legalize sports betting failed despite significant industry investment.
Age verification requirements, licensing obligations for operators, and the prohibition of in-play betting in certain states all apply to esports just as they do to traditional sports. What differs is the depth of regulatory guidance. Several state gaming commissions have issued specific bulletins or rule amendments addressing esports, while others have simply allowed the broad language of their sports betting statutes to cover competitive gaming by default. This inconsistency creates compliance challenges for operators and uncertainty for bettors who travel or relocate between states.
The Role of Licensed Operators and Market Structure
In states where esports betting is permitted, it can only legally occur through licensed and regulated sportsbooks. These include both retail locations — typically attached to casinos or racetracks — and online platforms operating under state-issued licenses. Major operators like DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and Caesars have all offered esports markets at various points, though coverage tends to be narrower than for traditional sports. Titles like League of Legends, Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Valorant appear most frequently, usually tied to major international tournaments such as The International, the League of Legends World Championship, or ESL Pro League events.
The market structure for esports betting also differs from traditional sports in ways that have regulatory implications. Esports events can take place at any hour due to the global nature of competitive gaming, with matches originating in South Korea, Europe, or Southeast Asia running at times when American oversight mechanisms may be less active. Some regulators have expressed concern about the difficulty of monitoring live events for suspicious betting patterns when the competition is occurring overseas and information flows rapidly through social media and streaming platforms like Twitch and YouTube Gaming.
Betzonic has noted that the integrity of esports competitions remains one of the primary concerns cited by state gaming commissions when evaluating whether to expand esports betting options. Match-fixing incidents in Counter-Strike, which came to wide attention through the iBUYPOWER scandal of 2014 and subsequent cases, established early that competitive gaming is not immune to the corruption risks that affect traditional sports. Several states require operators to have formal integrity monitoring agreements in place — either with the game publishers themselves or with third-party integrity services — before esports markets can be offered.
Offshore Sites, Gray Markets, and Legal Risk
A significant portion of esports betting by American consumers still occurs through offshore sportsbooks that are not licensed in any U.S. state. Sites operating from jurisdictions like Curaçao, Malta, or Antigua accept American customers and offer extensive esports markets, often with better odds and more event coverage than domestic operators. From the perspective of U.S. law, using these sites occupies a legal gray area. The UIGEA makes it illegal for financial institutions to process payments to unlicensed gambling sites, but it does not explicitly criminalize the act of placing a bet as an individual consumer. Federal prosecution of individual bettors for using offshore sites is essentially nonexistent in practice.
That said, the legal risk is not zero, and the consumer protections available through licensed domestic operators — including dispute resolution mechanisms, responsible gambling tools, and recourse in the event of a payout dispute — are entirely absent when dealing with offshore platforms. State attorneys general have occasionally issued warnings about offshore gambling sites, and financial transactions can be blocked or reversed by banks and credit card companies acting under UIGEA compliance obligations.
The distinction between legal domestic esports betting and the offshore market is one that Betzonic consistently emphasizes in its coverage of U.S. gambling law, pointing out that regulatory legitimacy carries practical benefits beyond mere legal compliance. A licensed sportsbook is subject to audits, required to maintain segregated player funds in many jurisdictions, and accountable to a state gaming control board — none of which apply to an unlicensed offshore operator regardless of how professionally designed its website may appear.
The trajectory of esports betting legality in the United States points toward gradual expansion and increasing regulatory specificity. As state gaming commissions gain more experience with esports markets and as the competitive gaming industry develops more robust integrity frameworks, the patchwork of current regulations is likely to become more coherent over time. For now, bettors who want to engage with esports wagering legally need to understand their own state’s rules, use only licensed operators, and recognize that the legal status of any given platform or market type can change as legislatures and regulators continue to adapt to a form of competition that simply did not exist when most American gambling law was written.

Per què necessites ulleres especials per veure un eclipsi?
Mirar directament el sol sense protecció pot provocar lesions oculars greus i irreversibles. Fins i tot durant un eclipsi parcial o anular, la radiació solar continua sent perjudicial.
Les ulleres de sol convencionals, els vidres enfosquits o qualsevol filtre casolà no són segurs per a l’observació solar.
A Òptiques La Creu Blanca t’oferim:
Ulleres homologades específiques per a eclipsis.
Filtres certificats segons normativa europea.
Assessorament professional personalitzat.
